Free Drain Unblocking: DIY Tips and When It’s Worth Calling a Pro

By Drain Block Services Plymouth, Devon & Cornwall Free Advice · No Obligation

Blocked drain? Before you spend money on a plumber or reach for an expensive chemical unblocker, there are several things you can try for free — right now, with stuff you probably already have at home.

At Drainblock Services, we’re big believers in honest advice. We’d rather tell you to try the hot water trick first than rush a van out unnecessarily. But there are times when DIY just won’t cut it — and knowing the difference can save you a lot of stress (and potentially a bigger repair bill later).

6 Free Ways to Unblock a Drain

These methods cost nothing (or very little) and can clear a surprising range of blockages in kitchen sinks, bathroom drains, showers, and even toilets:

1.

Boiling Water

The simplest fix. Pour a full kettle slowly down the plughole. Great for grease in kitchen drains. If it’s a bathroom sink, start with warm rather than boiling water to protect plastic fittings.

2.

Washing-Up Liquid + Hot Water

Squirt a generous amount of washing-up liquid, followed by boiling water. The soap acts as a surfactant, helping break down grease and move it through the pipe.

3.

Bicarbonate of Soda + White Vinegar

Pour half a cup of bicarb down the drain. Follow with a cup of white vinegar. Cover the plug hole and wait 15 minutes. Flush through with hot water. This combination fizzes and loosens minor clogs, and also neutralises smells.

4.

Plunger

A good old cup plunger can work wonders if you’ve got the right technique. Make sure there’s enough water in the bowl to cover the plunger cup, create a tight seal, and use slow firm plunges. Don’t rush it — patience works better than force.

5.

Remove and Clean the Trap

Most kitchen and bathroom sinks have a U-bend (or P-trap) beneath them. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew it, and clean out whatever’s in there. It’s often just a build-up of hair, soap, or food — easy to remove by hand.

6.

Wet/Dry Vacuum

If you’ve got a wet/dry vacuum at home, set it to liquid mode, seal it around the plug hole and switch it on. It can pull blockages up and out with some pressure — handy for showers and bathroom basins.

When DIY Isn’t Enough

Free methods have limits. If any of the following apply, it’s time to call in a professional drain service:

  • Multiple drains are slow or backing up at the same time
  • You’ve tried all of the above and the drain is still blocked
  • There’s a persistent foul smell that won’t go away
  • Gurgling sounds are coming from drains you haven’t used recently
  • Water is pooling outside near an inspection cover
  • The blockage is in a shared drain or sewer line

These signs often point to deeper issues — collapsed pipes, root ingress, or a problem further down the system — that no plunger or kettle can fix. This is where our CCTV drain survey and high-pressure jetting equipment comes into its own.

“My whole street seemed to have the same problem. Roman in Tavistock told me Drainblock came out the same afternoon, didn’t charge him for the advice call, and sorted it all in under two hours.”

Is There Such a Thing as Truly Free Drain Unblocking?

Some companies do offer free advice calls or no-obligation quotes — and that’s exactly what we offer at Drainblock Services. Ring us, describe what’s happening, and we’ll tell you honestly whether you need us or whether you can fix it yourself.

We know this sounds unusual — why would a drain company tell you how to avoid calling them? Because we’d rather earn your trust than your money. And when the problem does need professional intervention, we’ll give you a clear quote upfront with no hidden fees.

FAQ

Your Free Drain Unblocking Questions Answered

Can you really unblock a drain for free?

Yes — minor blockages can often be cleared with things you have at home. Boiling water, bicarb and vinegar, or a plunger costs you nothing. We’ll always tell you what’s worth trying first.

Do you charge for a phone consultation?

No. Calling us is completely free. We’ll assess your situation over the phone and give you honest advice — whether that means trying it yourself or booking us to come out.

Are chemical drain unblockers safe?

Use them with caution. They can damage older plastic or metal pipes, and should never be mixed with other products. For recurring blockages, they treat the symptom, not the cause.

Why does my drain keep blocking even after I’ve cleared it?

Recurring blockages usually mean there’s a deeper issue — a partial pipe collapse, grease build-up deeper in the system, or root ingress. A CCTV drain survey will find it quickly.

How long does a professional drain unblocking take?

Most jobs are resolved within 1–2 hours. We arrive fully equipped with jetting gear, CCTV cameras, and rods — so we’re not making multiple trips. We clear it and make sure it stays clear.
